Vice Chair Entertains

Our Vice Chairman, Ron Maslin accepted an invitation to deliver a short talk to our members evening sharing images and stories about his favourite holiday place in the UK. Ron has a holiday cottage in Wenslydale and has visited it with his partner Sharon for around 20 years. During that time he has amassed thousands of images and for the talk he gathered together a selection of his favourites. Not only did he show the photographs but he embellished them with stories about events and personalities that kept the audience fully engaged throughout the talk.

Amongst the many facts he provided was the astonishing statistic that within the area there are 5,400 miles of dry stone walling and 540 miles of rivers.

We visited many of Ron’s favourite haunts including Jervaulx Abbey, Middleham with its many horse stables, and Askrigg with its very well known waterfalls. Ron also shared an image of the Kings Arms in Askrigg, better known to viewers of All Creatures Great and Small as The Drovers Inn.

On we travelled to Bolton Castle where Mary Queen of Scotts spent six months of her later life before her beheading, and then it was off to Aysgarth Falls, and many other places of interest before arriving in Hawes, the home of Wenslydale Cheese. Then it was on to Garsdale Station, and its favourite steam train visitor, The Dalesman before heading off to the Ribblehead Viaduct.

Ron’s presentation proved the value of photography as a great way to build a memory chest of happy times and family vacations all of which were shared with our members in a relaxed and informative manner.
