10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

On the 11th of July 2015 club member Steve Myall began a project called 100 Strangers. The idea behind it is to approach people he had never met and ask if he could photograph them right there and then. Today marks the 10th anniversary of starting that project and, to date, Steve has taken portraits of 452 people.

When first beginning this project nerves had to be overcome about going up to strangers and asking if he could photograph them. But, like many things, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. There were a couple of years when Steve hardly photographed anyone due to Covid-19.

Steve tells us that doing a project like this, for himself and not to please judges, rekindled his enjoyment for photography and he encourages others to do something similar. Be warned though, projects such as this can become an obsession as Steve tells us he gets withdrawal symptoms if he doesn’t photograph a stranger every couple of weeks or so. Steve has set himself the target of 500 strangers by the end of the year and we wish him all the best in achieving this goal.

If you’d like to see more of Steve’s stranger photographs you can by following this link: https://www.flickr.com/photos/86202460@N00/ Either scroll down the page to see them, or click on albums where you will find each set of 100 strangers in its own album.

Steve also posts his images on the page https://www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers/ along with other photographers from all over the world.
