A First for Keyworth Camera Club as Paul Burrows gains DPAGB award

In our May review we mentioned that Paul had been to Scotland so he could be present when his images were judged for the Distinction award by the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain, and we are pleased to confirm that he was successful in his bid to be the first Keyworth Camera Club member to achieve this Distinction.

The process for gaining the award involves entering 15 images either as prints or projected images. Paul opted for the former. A panel of six judges assess the images and then award marks.

The prints are intermingled with all other applicants’ images so the judges have no idea whose they are marking. Each judge scores an image from 2 to 5. If they feel the image is of the standard required, they will mark it 4, but if they feel it isn’t up to standard, they will give it a 2. An image they think is almost there will receive a 3 and one they feel exceeds the level will receive a 5. The aim is to score an average of 20 per image to gain 300 points overall.

Marks are announced as each image is scored. This allows each entrant to keep a tally of how well, or badly, they are doing and by the end of the nerve-racking process they will have an idea if they have passed or not. However, if the total doesn’t reach the target of 300 and is just a few marks short the judges will take a further look at the images to see if they have been fair or could they have given some an extra mark – could that 3 have been a four?

We are very pleased that Paul’s trip to Scotland was a successful one.

Paul’s panel of images is included with this post. Also attached is a photograph of Paul being presented with his DPAGB badge by N&EMPF member David Gibbins, who is the current President of The PAGB. The third photograph shows all the successful DPAGB print applicants. The final image is of Paul’s certificate.
