Passion For Pictures – Chris Upton

On Thursday September 17th Chris Upton ARPS visited Keyworth Camera Club via Zoom to give us his presentation ‘Passion for Pictures’.

This talk had been billed as having something for everyone, and this certainly proved to be true. Chris showed pictures from many different countries which included a handful taken right on our doorstep. Chris had divided his show into a number of sections; Cities, Creative, Social Documentary, Landscapes, Seascapes, Transport, Urban Architecture and People. The quality and content of all the photographs in all the sections was absolutely superb. Chris’ commentary was engaging, clear and spiced with many tips on both technique and planning your shoot.

Chris explained how he gets to popular locations at least an hour before the perfect light arrives (sunrise or sunset) so as to beat the many other photographers who will turn up so he has choice of viewpoint. He talked about how important composition is, especially deciding just what to include and exclude. Remember less is more. He also mentioned how using a tripod helps with this. When the weather doesn’t play the game don’t let that disappoint you, stay positive and try something different – there is always a photograph to be taken.

Chris also showed how monochrome can be used to create mood or highlight details without having the distraction of colour competing for attention.

Hopefully our membership now realizes that the time of day you choose to take your images plays such an important role in how good your pictures will be. The quality of light is so vital to producing memorable and eye-catching photographs. We now expect KCC members to up early, whatever the time of year, and be on location before first light if they want to create images to match the quality of Chris’ work.

Thank-you Chris for providing us with an excellent and inspirational evening that was a massive hit with our members and guests.
